Right Brain Workout 1

The Right-brain Workout is a creative workbook of 70 questions posed by some of Australia’s most creative people… and me.

Whilst 98% of five-year-olds are considered ‘highly creative’, that number reduces to 30% by age ten, then 12% at age fifteen, and eventually to only 2% among adults. And with robots and AI coming, it’s all the more important to turn to your creative side.

Released by Penguin Random House on December 3, 2019, it’s been in the top 20 on Amazon’s best sellers list, and been featured on The Project, The Today Show, and ABC radio across the nation. It sold so well in its first two weeks, it’s on to its second print run.

‘What’s their face?’ is an illustrated portrait series, that uses a hyper-real drawing style combined with vibrant contrast colours and low key lighting to create a sense of intimacy with each subject.

Each drawing is A1 size and took about 30 hours using Caran D’ache Luminance & Pablo pencils. You can see some process time-lapse videos on a TikTok account I made for the project.

Music and design are my two passions in life. So when my childhood neighbour, and now international EDM producer extraordinaire Dave Winnel, asked me to create his first ever vinyl release I jumped at the chance. The vinyl release is available to purchase through Armada Music and is available to download via Apple Music and Spotify.

‘Rezzies’ was an original Aussie adult animated TV series concept pitch. I worked on this in my spare time with fellow advertising creatives Jess Wheeler and Tim O’Shea. Sex, drugs and beer pong... on Youth Allowance. Failed private school graduate Wayne must ace a bridging course while residing at the notorious Fairwater University Centre of Technology (F.U.C.T.) to gain access to a more prestigious institution. His ragtag bunch of floor mates led by the self proclaimed king of campus, Benny ‘fuckin’ Brogan, inevitably drag him into their toxic relationships, insane plots & schemes and debaucherous party culture.

I reckon Goodesy is the face of change. I remember leaving the premiere of Stan Grant’s ‘The Australian Dream’ feeling shocked and angry. Seeing and hearing the reactions of the wider indigenous community in the room made me realise we may not be as progressive as we think. It’s still available to watch on ABC iView, best viewed with an open heart and mind. It’s never too late to change your opinion, that’s what growth is.

This piece was a visual contribution to Issue #4 of the Gabberish in response to the theme of competition in advertising. Here's my take in the issue; Constant competitiveness saps creative energy. Effective collaboration illuminates the dark. This was my big career epiphany moment and it took about 2 years until I permanently flicked the switch.
